Luke 11:1-2 (ICB):
“[1] One time Jesus was praying in a place. When he finished, one of his followers said to him, ‘John taught his followers how to pray. Lord, please teach us how to pray, too.’ [2] Jesus said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Father, we pray that your name will always be kept holy. We pray that your kingdom will come.’”
This passage struck me today, not just for its message on prayer but for the incredible humility Jesus demonstrated. I couldn’t help but laugh at first, imagining how such a request might be received in a Kenyan context. Picture this: someone approaches a leader or even a regular Kenyan, saying, “So-and-so used to do this for us. Can you also do it like them?” The likely response? A defensive, ego-filled reaction like, “Why are you telling me to do it like John? If you want John’s way, go back to John!”
This attitude isn’t limited to leaders; even in personal relationships, similar scenarios play out. Imagine saying to someone, “My ex used to cook chicken like this; can you do it the same way?” You can almost hear the angry retort: “Then go back to your ex and let them cook it for you!” Such comparisons would lead to unnecessary fights, fueled by pride and insecurity.
But Jesus? He didn’t argue, question, or feel offended. He didn’t respond with ego or insecurity, worrying about being compared to John. Instead, with love and humility, He simply taught them how to pray. Jesus didn’t teach them to pray exactly as John did; He taught them with His unique wisdom, showing that humility is an act of confidence and love.
A truly humble person doesn’t hold back out of fear or insecurity. Jesus didn’t withhold this essential knowledge from His disciples. He didn’t think, “What if they say John’s way was better?” He was confident in His identity and His purpose. He taught them freely, without resentment, and gave them all they needed to learn from Him.
This challenges us to reflect on our own reactions. In business, for example, I strive to emulate this humility. Those who follow my work online know that I am generous with information. I share valuable insights openly, often at no cost. I don’t fear that someone might start a bigger or better business than mine. I reserve fees for planned coaching sessions—whether individual or group—but the rest I offer freely.
Why? Because I believe in sharing knowledge, just as Jesus did. He didn’t withhold His wisdom from His disciples. He didn’t keep “trade secrets.” He poured into them fully, equipping them with what they needed to grow.
This is a call for us to embrace humility in our lives. Not everything is a competition. Not everyone who asks for your help is trying to tear you down. When someone requests guidance or even asks you to do something a certain way, don’t take it as an insult or an attack. Instead, respond with love and understanding. Teach them your way, show them your perspective, and give them the tools to grow.
Children of God, let’s learn from Jesus’ example. Let’s replace pride and defensiveness with humility and generosity. Let’s not feel threatened or offended when others ask us to share or teach. Remember, humility is not a sign of weakness but of great strength.
Have a beautiful day. 🖤
