Money Is a Tool—Like Water or Sunlight—Best Used Wisely to Nourish Life’s Needs

4 June 20258 June 2025

Money, like water or sunlight, isn’t good or bad in itself. It’s just a resource—something that flows, something we work with. And just like water, it can nourish or drown. Just like sunlight, it can grow life or burn. It all depends on how we use it.

I used to feel a lot of shame around money. Either I didn’t have enough and felt like I was failing, or I had some and felt scared it would disappear. I’d swing between hoarding and overspending, always trying to control something that felt so slippery. But when I started viewing money as a natural tool, not a reflection of my worth, things began to change.

Nature gives us what we need in seasons. Rain doesn’t fall all the time. The sun doesn’t shine 24/7. In the same way, money comes and goes. Some seasons are abundant, and some feel like drought. But the goal isn’t constant overflow—it’s knowing how to use what’s there to support life.

Money can buy food, warmth, safety, rest, and even joy. It can also cause harm when used without care—when we chase it for approval, spend it to numb pain, or link it to self-esteem. But when we treat money as a tool—not an identity or a god—we free ourselves to use it wisely, with intention.

I’ve learned to ask myself: does this spending nourish my life? Does this saving protect what matters? Does this investment reflect my values? Am I using money to support the kind of life I want to grow?

There’s no perfect way to manage money. Like planting a garden, we learn through trial and error. We adapt with the seasons. We forgive ourselves for past mistakes. And we keep tending to our lives with care, using the tools we have, one thoughtful choice at a time.
