When Reason Becomes the Enemy

6 September 202529 October 2025

It’s unsettling to realize how openly some religious leaders have warned against thinking too much. Martin Luther — one of the most influential figures in Christian history — once called reason “the greatest enemy that faith has.” He even said, “Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his reason.”

Imagine that for a moment — being told that to truly belong, you must unsee. You must choose blindness over understanding. Obedience over inquiry.

For years, I lived in that world. Questioning anything sacred felt like rebellion. I was taught that doubt was dangerous, curiosity a slippery slope, and reason a test from the devil. So I silenced the parts of me that wanted to understand. I mistook suppression for faith.

Looking back, I see how effective that kind of teaching is — not just spiritually, but socially. When you strip people of their trust in their own minds, you don’t need to control them by force. They’ll do it themselves. They’ll censor their thoughts, guilt-trip their instincts, and build their own cages — convinced it’s righteousness.

What struck me in this passage wasn’t only Luther’s hostility toward reason, but how he seemed to recognize its power. He knew that once people began to think for themselves, the spell could break. That’s why faith had to be protected from the threat of logic — because logic makes you ask “why,” and “why” is where freedom begins.

But here’s the irony: reason and wonder can coexist. The more I understand about life — the biology, psychology, and sheer complexity of it — the more awe I feel. The more I let my mind stretch, the more alive I become. I didn’t lose meaning when I left religion. I lost the fear that meaning could only exist through it.

Maybe that’s what real faith in life looks like — trusting reality enough to look at it directly, without needing to shut your eyes.
