John 4:13-14 (ICB)
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. The water I give will become a spring of water flowing inside him. It will give him eternal life.’”
I heard Kathryn Khulman mention this verse, and suddenly, I saw it in a new light. Why do we thirst—for people, for things, for experiences, for money, for success, for recognition, and everything else that feels like it will complete us? Jesus told the woman at the well that if she drank from that well, she would thirst again.
Now, think about this. If you find yourself constantly longing, constantly needing more, constantly unsatisfied—what does that tell you? It tells you that you’ve been drawing from the wrong well. The well of the world. The same one Jesus warned about. But here’s the beautiful thing—Jesus didn’t just point out the problem. He gave the woman the solution: If she drank from Him, she would never thirst again.
Until this point, are we together? Good.
This means that people, things, experiences, money, success, and recognition are not bad in themselves. It’s not a sin to desire these things. The problem comes when we try to draw them from the wrong source. What Jesus wants is for us to draw everything from Him. Because when we do, we will never thirst again. The things He gives us will never run dry. They will not leave us empty. They will not leave us feeling like we are constantly chasing after something just out of reach. They will give us abundant life—filled with love, joy, and peace.
Let’s talk about relationships. Because this one hits home for me.
I’ve realized that in my past, I got my relationships from a worldly well. And that’s why I was always struggling, always sad, always feeling like something was missing. No matter what I did, I always felt like I was thirsting for more from the relationship, but it couldn’t satisfy me. Why? Because the source was wrong.
So what does it mean to get a life partner from the well of the world?
It means choosing someone based on the wrong things—on attraction alone, on money, on societal pressure, on temporary feelings. It means picking someone who looks good on paper but doesn’t have the foundation of Christ. It means getting into a relationship that drains you, confuses you, and leaves you constantly searching for more. That’s what happens when we draw from the wrong well.
Now, what does it mean to get a life partner from the well of Jesus?
It means allowing God to be the source of your love story. It means choosing someone who is rooted in Christ. Someone who leads you closer to God, not away from Him. Someone who reflects the heart of Jesus in the way they love, care, and serve. When you get a partner from the well of Jesus, the relationship is filled with love, peace, and joy—not because it’s perfect, but because it’s sustained by the One who never runs dry.
Now, let’s be real. What if you’re already married to someone from the worldly well? What if, reading this, you realize that your partner was not someone you sought from the well of Jesus? Does that mean all hope is lost? Absolutely not.
If you’re already in that marriage, the best thing you can do is bring it to Jesus. Pray for your spouse. Cover them in prayer. Ask God to transform both of you. And most importantly, you start drawing from the right well. When you begin to draw from Jesus, it changes everything—your heart, your perspective, your patience, your love. And through that transformation, your marriage can also change.
Now, let’s go beyond relationships.
Let’s talk about jobs.
You can get a job from a worldly well, and it will drain you. A toxic work environment, an abusive boss, a place where you are constantly undervalued and exhausted. But when you get a job from the well of Jesus? Even if the salary is lower, the peace that comes with it makes it worth more than any paycheck. Because when God gives you something, it comes with joy, not stress.
Let’s talk about money.
Money from a worldly well comes with sorrow. It runs out fast. It leaves you empty. It feels like no matter how much you make, it’s never enough. But when you draw money from Jesus, it’s different. You may not always have excess, but you will never lack. It stretches. It does what it’s supposed to do. It doesn’t control you.
The same goes for business.
If you start a business from a worldly well, it will be full of stress. You’ll constantly be worried, constantly chasing, constantly striving. But when you start a business from the well of Jesus? You’ll have peace in the process. Even in the hard days, you’ll feel joy in the work. The stress won’t consume you because you know who your provider is.
There are so many examples I could give. But the lesson is this—always seek to draw what you need from the well of Jesus. Because when you do, you will never thirst again.
Let me go back to relationships for a second.
You know men who are always thirsting for other women? Women who are always thirsting for other men? The issue comes down to this: they picked their partner from the wrong well. A well that will have them thirsting forever. A well that will never satisfy.
I’m not telling you to leave your person this Valentine’s Day. No. I’m telling you to start drawing from the well of Jesus. Because when you do, even what looked broken can be restored.
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I have a class in the evening, but I wanted to take my daughter out for a Valentine’s dinner. Just something small to make her happy. I don’t like physical gifts, but I love experiences. And I know my daughter will never forget that Mama took her out for Valentine’s Day. Her father is a gifter of things, while I’m a gifter of experiences.
Now, who’s going to explain to my lecturer that tonight, I have a Valentine’s dinner? Hahaha. Oh my goodness.
Have a beautiful day. 🖤
